Liposuktion

Fettabsaugung

Liposuction is a surgical intervention in which fat cells at specific locations under the skin are sucked through special cannulas. Plastic surgery knows a number of different techniques to achieve a gentle but still exact reduction of fat deposits. All procedures have their advantages and disadvantages, and all of these are very low-risk.

In all procedures, thin cannulas (small metal tubes) are inserted through incisions of a few millimetres that are made in discreet areas (e.g. skin folds) and are used to suck the fat in a vacuum process. In most cases, the fat is irrigated using a styptic and analgesic solution. This allows the surgeon of our centre Park-Klink Birkenwerder/Berlin to re-shape the body contour and to reduce fat accumulations. The skin covering the areas that are undergoing suction remains untouched and will start to shrink because of its elasticity, so that no lasting skin folds remain. An existing cellulitis might possibly be reduced, too.

The removal of distressing fat accumulations and the modelling of respective body parts will make the body look more slender and proportions more harmonious. However, liposuction is no alternative to weight loss, nor is it a treatment for obesity. It is not the whole person that can be made slimmer, but only individual areas where there is a strong accumulation of fat. Furthermore, if skin has become too sagging, the removal of excessive skin might become necessary together with the removal of fatty tissue.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for a personal consultation. Our surgeons will review, explain in detail, and discuss your options regarding »liposuction« at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin.

Does liposuction allow for any amount of fat to be removed?

It is not advisable to remove large amounts of fat through suction. Usually, the limit is between 3-4 litres.

Each patient should have realistic expectations regarding the results that can be achieved through liposuction. Localized fat deposits can be removed optimally in skin that is still elastic. Once the skin has been strongly overstretched or once there are no longer sufficient elastic fibres, an aesthetically satisfying result can only be achieved by surgically removing excess fat and skin, and then one will have to accept ensuing scars (thigh lift, abdominoplasty, body lift).

What are the complications that can occur in liposuction?

The liposuction performed by an experienced surgeon at Park-Klinik Birkenwerder/Berlin is a very low-risk procedure, still, skin retractions and irregular contours (dimples) cannot be excluded. Haematomas that are sometimes caused by liposuction disappear within a few weeks.

Important things to know – liposuction

In order to achieve an optimum result, a special compression garment will have to be worn for 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Do I need general anaesthesia for a liposuction and how long do I have to stay in hospital?

Smaller fat deposits can be removed under local anaesthesia. For larger amounts, additional twilight anaesthesia is recommended during liposuction. Here, sleep and pain killer medication are introduced into a vein, the patient is relaxed, anxiety-free and in a state of twilight sleep and does not feel any or only very little pain. The advantage of this approach is that all the body’s defensive reflexes are still active and that a muscle injury during liposuction can be safely prevented. General anaesthesia is only used in very comprehensive interventions, which usually require short-term hospitalisation. All other forms of liposuction are performed as in-office procedure.

What are the expected costs of liposuction?

The costs for liposuction (de) depend on the individual scope of services. For average prices, please refer to our price list.
